Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Introduction
Responsible for the design and development of remote handing systems, inspection systems and test rigs.
Responsible for running trials of engineering equipment and test rigs in an inactive environment.
Role Responsibility
- Production of 3D detailed design drawings to NNL Management System processes to meet internal and external customer requirements.
- Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers to optimise the design and manufacture process.
- Initiation and progression of the procurement process through to delivery and inspection.
- Involvement with the installation, commissioning and operational support of development test rigs.
- Development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products.
- Assist in the preparation of product safety related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, PUWER assessments, method statements, O&M manuals, and technical files.
- Direction of technical technician and craft personnel during equipment / rig build and operation.
- Respond to Customer technical issues related to the project.
- Provide advice and guidance on issues appropriate to his/her working area.
- Assist the project team in complying with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc. applicable to the project, including those required for CE marking.
- Ensure that work is delivered to meet time, cost and quality requirements.
The Ideal Candidate
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
- Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering or HNC Mechanical Engineering, or relevant level of experience in an engineering design role.
- Experience in the use of 3D CAD packages (preferably Solid Works) designing in an engineering development environment with a specific focus on remote handling, inspection systems and development / trials test rigs.
- Able to produce accurate detail design work and supporting calculations for checking and approval.
- Able to undertake complex design / development projects individually or as part of a team, under supervision.
- Ability to present complex technical information, ideas and concepts.
- Knowledge of NNL Management System and experience in designing to NNL Technical Manual design assurance processes including compliance with BS EN ISO 9001.
- Knowledge of the legislative and regulatory standards and procedures relating to engineering product development projects and CE marking.
- Knowledge of the design risk assessment process and the preparation of product technical files.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications
- Knowledge for the design of equipment for use in radiation and contaminated areas.
- Eligibility for Membership of a relevant professional Institution.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- IOSH Managing Safely.
- Evidence of problem solving and information seeking.
