The Chemical and Process Modelling (C&PM) team require a computer modeller. The role will involve supporting our commercial nuclear customers using a combination of process modelling or materials modelling and other analytical resources. Projects will include developing new or extending existing process models or flowsheets of chemical plants. The models will be used by NNL and our customers for a variety of purposes, which could include: design optimisation, improving or understanding existing plant performance, troubleshooting faults, developing mechanistic understanding and exploring decommissioning options.

This role is suited to an individual with a degree in Chemical Engineering or related scientific discipline who specialises in or has experience in computer modelling.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Process Modeller:

  • Delivering customer-funded programmes of work in the Chemical and Process Modelling team.
  • Delivering technical and research programmes as part of an integrated team including chemical modellers, experimental scientists and engineers.
  • Maintaining and developing process models.
  • Carry out computer simulations.
  • Reporting results to stakeholders.
  • Interpretation of model results and providing support to stakeholders based on conclusions.
  • Production of high quality technical work and dissemination through high quality report writing.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Process Modeller:

  • A degree in Chemical Engineering or related scientific discipline (min 2:1).
  • Experience using process modelling software such as gPROMS or Aspen Custom Modeller.
  • Experience of developing engineering models.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Good mathematical and computer literacy.
  • Ability to obtain BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks). 

Desirable Criteria for Process Modeller:

  • Experience of nuclear decommissioning and/or reprocessing.
  • Experience in use of other process modelling tools or software languages useful.
  • Experience presenting work (e.g. conference or outreach programmes).
  • An interest in statistics (e.g. probability distributions, uncertainty quantification).
