Job Description for Senior Project Manager & Customer Workstream Lead for New Build:

NNLs relationship with the nuclear new build community is key to our ongoing success and we have a critical role to play in fulfilling and delivering new technology to meet the UK’s net zero ambitions. This role will support and manage key new build programmes across several different technology areas. The ambition of the portfolio is to become the place to go for both national and international agencies and organisations in respect to Advanced Nuclear Technologies (SMR, AMRs, gen 3+ and most importantly IV) and in doing so building on the current and existing NNL resources, capabilities and unique facilities and promoting growth in a sustainable manner. 

This is a senior position with the Project Management Authority as a Senior Project Manager within the New Build and Advanced Nuclear Technologies business area. As a Senior Project Manager, you will be accountable for delivering medium to complex multi-disciplinary projects safely to the agreed level of quality, schedule and cost in a manner that complies with the NNL’s defined EHS&Q framework and full compliance with all NNL policies. As a Senior Project Manager based at Chadwick House, Risley, you will have line management responsibilities for up to a team of 8 individuals. 

The successful candidate will also take on the responsibilities of the Customer Workstream Lead for the New Build and Advanced Nuclear Technologies Portfolio, in doing so you will support and report directly into the Account Director for New Build and Advanced Nuclear Technologies regarding the day-to-day portfolio management of the projects in that area. 

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for Senior Project Manager & Customer Workstream Lead for New Build:

  • Leadership responsibility for Project Manager resources to ensure that a high-quality Project Management services are being delivered within portfolio.
  • Line management leadership of team working within the New Build, ANT area, ensuring optimal performance the Project Management Team in terms of utilisation and billability of personnel, training & development, and health & welfare of staff, etc. and provision of regular management information reports for senior level periodic PMA reviews.
  • Supervision of portfolio delivery and related reporting (this includes monthly reporting for each project and at portfolio level as per NNL reporting processes).
  • Provision of senior leadership on complex projects to ensure that they are delivered in a safe manner to the specified functional criteria, goals and objectives compliant with all relevant Client, NNL, EHSS&Q, regulatory and legal assurance requirements.
  • Ensuring that financial performance is managed to achieve maximum revenue and profitability of the project (supported by the Project Controls function).

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Senior Project Manager & Customer Workstream Lead for New Build:

  • Project Management professional qualification (e.g. APMPMQ, Diploma APM, IPMA Level D).
  • Demonstrable experience in a Project / Programme Management capacity delivering multi-disciplinary projects across different sites and teams and with use of supply chain as appropriate.  
  • Demonstrable experience of successfully leading and delivering medium-large scale / complex projects, in a Senior Project or Programme Management capacity.   
  • Demonstrable knowledge of project delivery processes, life cycle management methodologies and value adding tools, processes and practices. 
  • Experience of delivering a range of projects in a nuclear environment, ideally including technical, infrastructure and capital projects, including installations, commissioning and management of safety case and / or regulatory requirements. 
  • Experience of delivering projects under different contracting models. 
  • Demonstrable experience of team leadership / mentoring / coaching. 
  • Strong understanding of typical project delivery procedures, tools protocols and systems within a nuclear environment or equivalent regulated industry. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite (Incl. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and working knowledge of MS Project / EPM / Primavera P6, or other Project Management software packages and / or tools.
  • Ability to understand a portfolio of projects, with the ability to adapt from strategy to detail.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to engage stakeholders and build strong collaborative relationships.
  • Demonstrable ability in negotiation and meeting client requirements.
  • Acts as a role model to NNL’s values and behaviours.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire others to achieve goals.
  • Ability to prioritise efforts and activities (of self and teams) based on project / customer expectations and NNL project commitments / required outcomes.
  • Ability to obtain BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks). 

Desirable Criteria for Senior Project Manager & Customer Workstream Lead for New Build:

  • Technical Background (Engineering or Science degree level).
  • Experience of R&D programmes.
  • IOSH qualification (Managing Safely ideally).
  • Understanding of HMG priorities and policy within New Build. 
  • Experience and interest in New Build and Advanced Nuclear Technologies (SMR, AMRs, gen 3+ and most importantly IV).
