UK SMR Regulatory Engagement Lead

The role of the UK SMR (Small Modular Reactor) Regulatory Engagement Lead is to support the delivery of NNL’s scope of work to the UK SMR project. The role is to provide specialist advice, knowledge and expertise on regulation and GDA. The role also advises the UK SMR consortium on UK innovation strategy with regard to innovation in Advanced Nuclear Technologies and manufacturing. We support working flexibly, can accommodate homeworking, and can be flexible about location between our sites in the North West of England; some travel will be necessary to support business needs.

Role Responsibility

Main Responsibilities for UK SMR (Small Modular Reactors) Regulatory Engagement Lead are:

Regulation and engagement:

  • Provide advice on UK regulation for new build reactors, and generic design assessment
  • Support UK SMR on engagement with ONR and EA
  • Advise the UK SMR consortium on UK enabling policy including regulation, siting, public perception, international, and R&D
  • Specify, advise and peer review UK SMR GDA submissions

R&D Strategy:

  • Provide advice to the UK SMR team on innovation in the nuclear supply chain, supporting advanced manufacturing
  • Provide advice on innovation in Advanced Nuclear Technologies

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for UK SMR (Small Modular Reactor) Regulatory Engagement Lead:

  • Experience in regulatory reviews.
  • Experience working with the ONR and EA in GDA, licensing, permitting.
  • Ability to achieve SC Clearance 

Desirable Criteria for UK SMR (Small Modular Reactor) Regulatory Engagement Lead:

  • Experience working with BEIS nuclear policy.
  • Experience as a nuclear regulator.
  • Experience of international nuclear regulation.
